Program Description:
Discussing Peri-implant disease.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the Prevalence and Clinical Significance of Peri-Implant Diseases: Recognize that peri-implant diseases affect approximately one in five patients (20%) and one in 10 implants (10%) experienced incident peri-implantitis within the first four years of function. This emphasizes the importance of early detection and prevention.
  2. Identify and Assess Risk Factors for Peri-Implantitis: Evaluate key risk factors such as a history of periodontitis, lifestyle behaviors (e.g., smoking, inadequate sleep), implant location, and prosthetic design elements, as established by longitudinal cohort studies.
  3. Apply Evidence-Based Prevention Strategies in Clinical Practice: Integrate knowledge of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors into patient care by addressing behavioral risks and customizing preventive protocols for high-risk individuals.
  4. Critically Review Current Treatment Limitations and Encourage Informed Consent: Acknowledge the lack of a gold-standard treatment for peri-implantitis and incorporate this uncertainty into patient education and informed consent discussions, while striving to implement best available practices.
