Committee Purpose
The ethical standards of the dental profession prioritize the benefit of patients as their primary focus. The role of the Ethics/Special Issues Committee is to investigate any complaints or allegations concerning the conduct of its members. Additionally, the committee evaluates activities and programs assigned to it by the Board of Directors.

Structure and Composition
The Ethics and Special Issues Committee includes three Directors from the Board: one senior Director, one sophomore Director, and one first-year Director. The freshman appointment is made annually by the incoming CDS President.

Committee Goals
Ethics
- To examine all alleged complaints regarding member conduct.
- To investigate alleged complaints according to the CDS Bylaws.
- When addressing alleged complaints about potential violations of the ADA Code of Ethics or the Illinois Dental Practice Act, this Committee will:
- Forward all alleged complaints to the Committee for review.
- Assess whether the issue violates the ADA Code of Ethics and/or the Illinois Dental Practice Act.
- If said complaint is determined to be a violation, the information will be shared with the appropriate agency and the Committee will report their recommendations to the CDS Board of Directors.
- While investigating alleged complaints, the committee will function in an intermediary position only. The Committee will contact all parties involved for additional information.
- Any letter sent to the individual member will be signed by the current CDS President on CDS letterhead, clearly articulating the nature of the violation and the Board’s recommended resolution.
Special Issues
- The Special Issues Committee evaluates relevant and timely special issues to and from the Board of Directors.
Meeting:
The Committee meets on issues as needed by Zoom.
