UIC College of Dentistry celebrates 2025 Commencement with pride and purpose

Chicago, Ill.− The University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry held its annual commencement ceremony on May 8 at the UIC Isadore and Sadie Dorin Forum, marking a significant milestone for the Class of 2025. A total of 160 degrees were conferred, including Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Advanced Specialty Certificates, Master of Oral Sciences, Master of Public Health, and Doctor of Philosophy in Oral Sciences.

Serving as Master of Ceremonies was Dr. Judy Yuan, associate dean for clinical affairs, who led the program with grace and professionalism. The event featured inspiring remarks from several distinguished guests, including University of Illinois Trustee Ramon Cepeda, University of Illinois System President Dr. Timothy Killeen, and UIC Chancellor Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda.

Graduates Drs. Minette Infante-Bugarin and Ananya Sawlani opened the ceremony with a heartfelt rendition of the national anthem, setting the tone for a celebration rich with pride and accomplishment.

Chancellor Miranda delivered a powerful message emphasizing UIC’s unique super power—its commitment to broad access to world-class education, research and clinical excellence. She highlighted the university’s national rankings, noting UIC’s position as #1 in social mobility and #10 among U.S. public universities, underscoring the institution’s impact and mission.

The keynote address was delivered by Dean Susan Rowan, DDS ’84, MS ’19, who shared eight guiding principles to inspire the graduates as they embark on their professional journeys. Her advice ranged from “pairing passion with action” to “believing in yourself,” leaving graduates with lasting wisdom and encouragement.

Dean Rowan also acknowledged the exceptional faculty whose dedication has shaped the clinical and academic excellence of the graduating class. The prestigious Golden Apple Awards—voted on by the students—were presented to Dr. Betti Shahin and Dr. Luis Mezzomo, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the DMD and DMD Advanced Standing programs, respectively.
Dr. Scott Tomar, associate dean for prevention and public health sciences, led the new dentists in the recitation of the Dentist’s Pledge, affirming their commitment to ethical practice and lifelong service.

The ceremony also included recognition of academic honors, scholarships and awards, celebrating the hard work and accomplishments of the graduates.

Following the formal proceedings, graduates and their families were welcomed back to the College of Dentistry for a lively and memorable reception. The celebration featured high-energy festivities, including live music by a talented UIC jazz ensemble that added an upbeat and festive atmosphere. Graduates enjoyed numerous photo opportunities throughout the college’s spaces, capturing joyful moments with faculty, friends and loved ones. The reception served as a vibrant culmination of years of dedication and achievement—filled with laughter, music, and heartfelt congratulations—marking the beginning of the graduates’ next chapter in dentistry.
