Scientific Programs Subcommittee (SPSC)

Committee Purpose
The SPSC is responsible for the Regional Meetings, webinars, and CDS CE programs. Integrating all the CDS CE programs into the DMC will ensure they are coordinated, timely, and current. The CDS Officers Subcommittee members will be responsible for planning the Midwinter Meeting social and networking events, with knowledge of financial parameters and limitations.

    The Scientific Programs Subcommittee (SPSC) will have six voting members with ongoing responsibilities for each meeting over their term.

    When elected Treasurer, each officer will name a member to the Scientific Program Subcommittee (SPSC) (corresponding to the former Program Chair) as the officer begins his/ her term on the Board. This appointment will start with the Treasurer’s term on January.

    – This appointment will last for the officer’s time on the CDS Board of Directors and will include the year after that officer’s Midwinter Meeting as President. Thus, each SPSC member will be selected for a 5-year and 2-month term with that final year serving as the Senior Consultant.

    Except for the Year-1 SPSC member who serves in that capacity for 14 months, each member will move to the next committee position after the Midwinter Meeting. The Year-4 SPSC member will move up to the Chair of the SPSC and will serve as Chair of the SPSC until the end of the following Midwinter Meeting. The Senior Consultant term will begin after their President’s Midwinter Meeting.

    – In addition to the SPSC and the COSC, the CDS New Dentist Board Director will be a member of the DMC for 1 year and will be a member of the SPSC. The New Dentist member will begin their tenure on the DMC on January 1 after their appointment with the CDS Board of Directors and complete their term on the SPSC on December 31.

    The CDS New Dentist Board member will be a voting member of the SPSC and DMC. Upon completing his/her term on the Board of Directors, the CDS Retired New Dentist Board member will be a member of the COSC for a 1-year term and will continue on the DMC for an additional year term (for a total of 2 years).

    The Retired New Dentist member will begin his/her tenure on the COSC/DMC on January 1 after completing his/her term on the CDS Board of Directors. The terms of the COSC and DMC will end on the following December 31. The CDS Retired New Dentist Board member will be a COSC and DMC voting member.

    The SPSC committee will meet 3-5 times per year in which speakers and topics will be chosen for Regional Meetings, webinars, and other CDS CE programs.

    Goals:

    Provide continuing education opportunities to meet the various membership and educational needs of our CDS members and their staff and educational opportunities for the non-member dental community and other healthcare professionals (the CDS “customer”). The SPSC members will work closely with the Director of Scientific Programs to plan the continuing education programs for the Chicago Dental Society including the annual Chicago Midwinter Meeting, the Regional Meetings, online CE programs and any other educational programs the committee deems necessary to meet the mission, goals and membership needs of the Chicago Dental Society.
    Identify relevant and innovative evidence-based areas of interest as well as programs that provide implementable knowledge and skills to CDS members and their staff, non-member dentists, and other healthcare professionals in accordance with the CDS Mission Statement and CDS Board of Directors Policies.
    Identify qualified and experienced subject matter experts in conjunction with the Director of Scientific Programs to deliver high-quality content in accordance with ADA CERP Standards.
    Conduct financially responsible education programs in accordance with the annual budget proposed by the Finance Committee and approved by the CDS Board of Directors.
    Efficiently administer the on-site activities of the Scientific Programs Division at the Midwinter Meetings, Regional meetings, and other CDS CE programs.
    Institute a scout training program for new members in their first year on the subcommittee.
    Maintain a Speaker Database.
    Establish an annual rotation for meeting attendance for scouts to experience the major dental meetings.
    Participate in scouting discussions at the SPSC meetings and on scouting trips to share speaker information and opinions with the subcommittee.
