Scientific Programs Subcommittee (SPSC)

Committee Purpose
The Scientific Programs Speaker Committee (SPSC) is responsible for the Clinical Programming of all CDS educational programs. Bringing all the CDS CE programs into the DMC will foster better coordination, ensuring that they are timely and consistently up to date, while adhering to the financial parameters and limitations as determined by the CDS Board of Directors. The SPSC also engages in CE Program Development and Scouting.

Structure and Composition
The Scientific Program Speaker Committee will have seven (7) voting members with ongoing responsibility for all educational meetings over their term, including attendance at meetings.

Upon being elected Treasurer, each officer will name a member to the Scientific Program Speaker Committee (SPSC) at the start of their term on the Board. This appointment will start with the Treasurer’s term on January 1, coincide with the officer’s term on the CDS Board of Directors, and encompass the year following that officer’s term as President at the Midwinter Meeting.

Each SPSC member will be appointed for a 5-year and 2-month term, with the final year serving as the Senior Consultant. At the conclusion of their fourth year, the SPSC member will move up to the Chair of the SPSC and will serve until the end of the following MWM. The Senior Consultant term will begin after their term as Chair of the Midwinter Meeting concludes.

The CDS New Dentist Board Director will begin a two-year term on the DMC when they join the CDS Board of Directors. In the first year on the DMC, the New Dentist Board Director will serve as a member of the SPSC. Their tenure on SPSC will begin on January 1, following their appointment by the CDS Board of Directors, and conclude on December 31 of the same year. The CDS New Dentist Board member will hold voting rights on both SPSC and DMC.

After completing their term on the Board of Directors, the CDS Immediate past New Dentist Board member will serve on the COC for one (1) year.

Committee Goals

  • Provide continuing education opportunities to meet the diverse educational needs of members of the oral health community and other healthcare professionals. The SPSC will work closely with the Director of Scientific Programs to plan all continuing education for the Chicago Dental Society.
  • Identify relevant and innovative evidence-based areas of interest and programs that provide implementable knowledge and skills in concordance with the CDS Mission Statement.
  • Identify and collaborate with the Director of Scientific Programs to select experts who deliver high quality subject matter in accordance with ADA CERP, PACE, or other certified entities.
  • Along with the DSP, the Committee will participate as a group in the speaker selection process, including special programs or speaker requests. Speakers will be chosen to create a well-rounded, educationally sound, and financially viable program.
  • Develop a scout training program for new members of the Committee and establish an annual rotation to attend major dental meetings.
  • Promote active discussions amongst members during meetings and scouting trips, allowing scouts to collaborate and share information.
