Another Significant Step Forward
The Chicago Dental Society (CDS) has taken another significant step forward in affirming its commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming professional community. At its most recent meeting, the CDS Board of Directors unanimously approved the Philosophy Statement presented by the Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee, formally establishing guiding principles that reflect the society’s values and vision for the future.
A Philosophy Rooted in Respect and Representation
The newly adopted statement reads:
“The Chicago Dental Society (CDS) embraces a culture of diversity and inclusion that enables its members to engage in respectful dialogue and interaction with one another and the settings in which they serve. Through the recognition of a variety of lived experiences within the Chicagoland dental community, CDS provides equitable opportunities for personal and professional development that empower members to become leaders. Welcoming diverse voices and viewpoints endows CDS with the strength to cultivate a relevant and sustainable organization that prioritizes health for all.”
This statement captures the essence of what the D&I Committee has been striving toward: creating a professional home where every member feels valued, heard, and supported. It acknowledges that diversity is not only about representation but also about cultivating meaningful engagement and ensuring equitable opportunities for growth and leadership within the organization.
The Work of the D&I Committee
The D&I Committee, comprised of dedicated volunteer members from across the Chicagoland dental community, has been intentional in listening, learning, and shaping strategies that address the evolving needs of the profession. From identifying barriers to engagement, to elevating underrepresented voices, to encouraging thoughtful dialogue, the committee has worked to lay the foundation for a more inclusive future at CDS.
The adoption of the Philosophy Statement signals the next stage of this journey: embedding diversity and inclusion into the fabric of CDS decision-making, programming, and member engagement. By doing so, the committee and the Board are ensuring that the society remains not only relevant but also resilient in the face of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for dentistry.
Why This Matters
The Chicagoland dental community is as vibrant and varied as the city itself. Our members bring a wide range of lived experiences, cultural perspectives, and professional insights. This richness is a strength—one that helps CDS better serve not only its members, but also the patients and communities they care for.
By formally adopting this philosophy, CDS is sending a clear message: inclusion is not optional. It is central to our mission of advancing oral health and supporting the profession. A culture where all members feel welcome empowers individuals to grow, contribute, and lead in ways that strengthen the entire organization.
Looking Ahead
The D&I Committee’s work is ongoing, and the approval of this statement is just the beginning. With the philosophy now serving as a guiding framework, the committee will continue to collaborate with members, leaders, and partners to implement initiatives that bring these values to life. From educational programming to leadership development opportunities, CDS will continue to prioritize spaces where diverse voices are not only welcomed but celebrated.
As CDS moves forward, this milestone reinforces a timeless truth: when we embrace diversity and inclusion, we do more than strengthen our organization—we strengthen the future of dentistry.
