2017 Midwinter Meeting: Day 1
CHICAGO—Screw-in teeth. Laser-assisted dentistry. The fight against opiate addiction. The “crown revolution.” There's no better place than the Chicago Dental Society’s 152nd Midwinter Meeting to learn about innovations in clinical care, advances in oral-care technology and much more.
Nearly 30,000 dentists and dental professionals will gather Feb. 23-25 at McCormick Place West for one of the nation’s largest and longest-running scientific dentistry conferences. The Midwinter Meeting features more than 220 courses presented by 140 experts that address all aspects of dentistry, and more than 700 exhibitors offering an array of new products, materials, equipment and services to enhance oral care. One of the Chicago area’s major conferences, the annual Midwinter Meeting pumps tens of millions of dollars into the city’s economy.
CDS President Phillip Fijal says attendees will include a variety of oral health professionals.
“The intent of this year’s meeting is to enhance everyone’s leadership skills through a variety of classes that are offered for each member of the dental team,” said Dr. Fijal, a general dentist who practices in Des Plaines. “Our courses will focus on the team approach to the dental delivery system, allowing each member to improve both their clinical and interpersonal skills.”
Course topics will include:
- 'Can I Have Some of Those Screw-In Teeth?'
- Detecting and preventing oral cancer
- Laser-assisted dentistry
- Effects of aging on oral health
- Dealing with patient anxiety
- Treating patients with autism
- The role of dentists in preventing pain medication drug abuse
In keeping with the conference theme, “Leadership: Cornerstone for Success,” the opening session speaker on Thursday, February 23 will be John McDonough, President and CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks. Since Mr. McDonough joined the Chicago Blackhawks, the team has won three Stanley Cup titles, becoming the first organization in the National Hockey League’s salary cap era to capture that many championships.
Media interested in covering Mr. McDonough’s speech are asked to contact Rachel Schafer at the Chicago Dental Society by close of business Wednesday, Feb. 22.
