Chicago Dental Society dentists will be volunteering their time to provide free routine dental exams and other services at the CDS Foundation Clinic on Give Kids a Smile Day, Saturday, Feb. 4. Parents are encouraged to call ahead for an appointment at 630.260.8530.

Would you like to talk to the Chicago Dental Society Foundation's Executive Director Kristen Weber, who can tell you this is all part of the Dental Society Foundation's efforts to help improve kids' oral health? Here are some additional interesting facts:

  • • Tooth decay is the number one chronic illness in children.
  • • 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental problems.
  • • Research shows that if a child’s tooth decay goes untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, speech problems and even loss of self-esteem.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM), and it is also the month of the Chicago Dental Society's 152nd Annual Midwinter Meeting.

The Chicago Dental Society Foundation has many efforts underway to help kids and adults focus on and improve their oral health in February. Founded in 2008 by the Chicago Dental Society, the Chicago Dental Society Foundation works to achieve its mission of improving the oral health in our communities by providing dental health care to low income residents at the CDS Foundation Clinic, providing grants to local area community organizations, partnering with corporate supporters to provide funding for oral health community service projects, providing programs to increase oral health literacy and access to care, and providing opportunities for sponsorship of these activities.

Also, as part of National Children's Dental Health Month, more than 100 CDS member dentists are scheduled to visit schools, give presentations, participate in classroom activities and pass out toothbrushes and toothpaste.

That's in addition to the more than 117,072 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste that the Chicago Dental Society sends to 314 schools in Cook, DuPage and Lake counties.
