Honoring her “passion” for her patients and profession, Chicago Dental Society member Dr. Flavia Lamberghini  is the 2019 winner of the esteemed Jim Tyree Emerging Business Leadership Award.

The Chicago Chamber of Commerce presented the award to Dr.  Lamberghini, founder of Apple Dental Care,  on June 4 after she bested 12 other finalists during  several rounds of interviews and a final challenging “Shark Tank” presentation with two other finalists. The award recognizes “an inspiring small business who has excelled in business while also making a lasting impact in their community.”

Her vision is born of what she sees as a pressing need in her community but lacking for too many. “I want all kids to have the same access to dental care my kids have,” Dr. Lamberghini explained in a chamber video.

A panel of judges chose Dr. Lamberghini after evaluating her vision and financial plan at Apple Dental as well as her plans to  use the $50,000 award, named after the late CEO of Mesirow Financial, James Tyree, known for his dedication to civic engagement.  Among the judges were the CEOs of the chamber and CIBC Bank as well as Tyree’s widow, Eve. Mesirow and CIBI provide the financial award, while the chamber provides ongoing business consulting services.

Dr. Lamberghini wears  many hats, running her pediatric practice on North Milwaukee Avenue,  teaching dental residents from the University of Illinois Dental School, and collaborating with the Chicago Public Schools’ Head Start program where she provides education and preventative dental services. Originally from Argentina, she received both her master’s degree in oral science and public health from UIC.

In her initial pitch for the award, Lamberghini described Apple Dental as a “state-of-the-art pediatric dental clinic” that welcomes every child who visits, combining service, education and community outreach in its offices, hospital and schools. Roughly 90 percent of Apple Dental’s patients are on Medicaid. An important element of her practice – and Dr. Lamberghini’s personal mission -- is its innovative education program, working with her dental assistants interested in becoming dentists to further their education. She plans to use the award to establish a Jim Tyree Endowment to underwrite efforts to bring more education and dental services to the community.

Dr. Lamberghini also is the 2017 recipient of the CDS Foundation Vision Award.
