Implicit Bias

Course Description:

This course fulfills the Illinois requirement for Implicit Bias Awareness training. Implicit Bias is a form of bias that occurs unintentionally. Even though the bias is unintentional or unconscious, it can affect judgement, decisions, and behaviors.

Learning Objectives

To help course attendees understand and be aware of implicit bias.
To support dentists in understanding that racism, at an unconscious level, can impact their behavior and decisions.
To show dentists that awareness of this bias is the first step in changing behavior.

About the Speaker

Kevin Patterson, DDS, is a well-known South Suburban Branch Member. He is a Past President and Past Director of the Branch. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine Illinois. He serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at Midwestern and holds a certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Academics from Midwestern University.
