What is the Role of the Dental Team in Screening for Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer?

Course Description

Oral and oropharyngeal cancer is an aggressive epithelial malignancy. Despite advances in treatment, long term survival has remained modest. This is due to many factors including delayed diagnosis. Early detection and prevention are critical aspects of managing this disease. This lecture will review the etiologic factors associated with both oral and oropharyngeal cancer. It will also emphasize and review the critical role of dentistry in performing a comprehensive visual and tactile exam and review the ADA Clinical Guidelines for oral cancer screening.

Course Objectives

After this course, you will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the critical role of dental health care professionals in screening for oral premalignancy and oral/oropharyngeal cancer
  2. Understand the importance of performing a thorough visual and tactile exam on all patients
  3. Implement the ADA Clinical Guidelines algorithm for oral cancer screening

About the Speaker

Mark Lingen is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Chicago Medicine. He completed his dental school training, Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology residency and PhD in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at Northwestern University. Dr. Lingen is the Editor in Chief of the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology Oral Radiology (TripleO). His research dealing with the molecular diagnostics and oral cancer prevention has resulted in more than 160 publications. Dr. Lingen is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Royal College of Pathologists.
