DESCRIPTION:Credit Hours: 3 Hours\nCourse Title: Beyond the Tooth: Recognizing Neuropathic Orofacial Pain in Everyday Practice\nSpeakers:Dr. Linda Sangalli\nLocation: The Westin Chicago Lombard \nCourse Description:\nThis 3-hour interactive\, case-based educational program is designed to strengthen clinicians’ diagnostic reasoning when evaluating patients who present with orofacial pain. Because many neuropathic pain conditions may initially resemble odontogenic or temporomandibular disorders\, misdiagnosis can lead to unnecessary dental procedures and delays in appropriate care. \nThis course introduces a structured clinical approach that emphasizes first ruling out odontogenic sources of pain\, then identifying temporomandibular disorder-related pain\, and finally recognizing when neuropathic orofacial pain should be considered. Through a virtual patient-based learning platform\, participants will engage with realistic clinical scenarios that simulate decision-making in everyday dental practice. \nBy the end of the program\, participants will be better equipped to recognize neuropathic pain presentations\, avoid common diagnostic pitfalls\, and improve the quality and safety of care for patients with complex orofacial pain conditions. \nCourse Objectives: At the conclusion of this course\, participants should be able to: \n\n\n\nApply a stepwise diagnostic framework to orofacial pain by systematically screening for odontogenic and temporomandibular disorder-related pain (TMD) before considering neuropathic etiologies.\nRecognize characteristic signs and symptoms suggestive of neuropathic orofacial pain in a dental setting.\nFormulate an initial management and referral plan for patients with suspected neuropathic orofacial pain using clinical decision-making skills in simulated virtual patient scenarios.\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nDr. Linda Sangalli\, DDS\, MS\, PhD\, is a dentist by training\, having earned her dental degree from the University of Brescia in Italy. She also completed a specialization in orthodontics and a PhD in Technology for Health in Italy. After working for a decade as a specialist orthodontist\, she moved to the University of Kentucky\, where she completed a Master of Science in Orofacial Pain\, along with graduate certificates in applied statistics and epidemiology. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. \nDr. Sangalli currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine–Illinois\, where she teaches orofacial pain to predoctoral students and manages patients with orofacial pain. She is also an attending physician at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. \nHer research focuses on virtual learning environments designed to strengthen dental providers’ education in temporomandibular disorders\, as well as non-pharmacological sleep strategies for managing orofacial musculoskeletal pain. Her research has received funding from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research\, the ADEA Gies Foundation\, the American Headache Society\, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain\, the International Association for the Study of Pain\, the International Association for Dental Research\, and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles in the past 5 years and has contributed to numerous books and national presentations on orofacial pain. \n2026-2027 Branch Leader Orientation will follow after lunch. \n

If you treat children in your practice or if you would like to I hope the little things you learn from us today make a big difference in your practice. \nSpeaker Bios: Dr. Cissy Furusho is a Pediatric Dental Specialist with a thriving private practice\, Dentistry for Kids\, in Chicago in partnership with Dr. Kirk Kollmann. Together they purchased Dr. Marvin Berman’s practice 28 years ago. He was her pediatric dentist and the person who inspired he to become a pediatric dentist. She received her Bachelor degree in biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and later earned her DDS\, pediatric specialty degree and her Master’s Degree in Oral Biology at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. She is a Board-Certified pediatric dentist and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is laser certified with the Academy of Laser Dentistry and has studied oral facial myofunctional therapy. Dr. Furusho was on faculty in the Pediatric Department at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and served as an attending in the residency program at Illinois Masonic Hospital. Dr. Furusho has dedicated herself for many years to organized dentistry having served as President of the American Association of Women Dentists\, past president of the University of Illinois College of Dentistry Alumni Association\, and was on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Dental Society. She has volunteered her time to Illinois Missions of Mercy and has chaired the pediatric section. Dr. Furusho is currently chair of the Gillette Hayden Memorial Foundation and a past-member of the ADA Strategic Forecasting Committee. Dr. Furusho is a Fellow of both the American College of Dentist and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Furusho loves being a pediatric dentist\, is an animal advocate and in her spare time volunteers at her son’s school. \nDr. Kirk Kollmann is a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist in Lincolnwood. As a staff member of Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago\, he serves the Cranio-Facial population in the Chicagoland area while supervising pediatric dental residents. Davenport\, III\, DMD. \nCourse Description:Reviewing best practices for endodontic cases: case selection and techniques for the general dentist. \nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Davenport was born and raised in the South suburbs of Chicago. He decided very early on to pursue a career in dentistry\, but still cultivated his passion for the saxophone\, attending Augustana College on a music scholarship with a major in Biology and minor in Biochemistry. After graduating Summa Cum Laude\, Dr. Davenport attended the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. While at Harvard\, Dr. Davenport conducted research on the impact of autoimmune diseases\, such as lupus and multiple sclerosis\, on oral health. Dr. Davenport completed a residency in Endodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and\, after several years of private practice\, founded Advanced Endodontics of Chicago in 2010. He previously served as an Associate Clinical Professor in UIC’s Department of Endodontics. Outside of the office\, Dr. Davenport is an avid golfer and traveler. Dentists are on the front line of early diagnosis of head and neck cancer; however\, once a lesion is identified\, what happens during the diagnostic workup and treatment process is often unclear. This presentation will demystify that process by reviewing the standard metastatic workup\, as well as the surgical and non-surgical treatment options for patients with head and neck cancer. Dr. Tozum also went on to earn a Certificate in Advanced Periodontics from UIC\, and holds a Dental License in the State of Illinois. \nPrior to joining UIC\, he served as Professor of Periodontology\, and Associate Dean of Dentistry at Hacettepe University\, Turkey. He currently serves as an Adjunct Faculty Member at University of Messina-Italy\, Near East University-TRN Cyprus\, Lokman Hekim University-Turkey and Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University-Turkey. He gave more than 100 lectures at different parts of the world about complex perio-implant surgeries\, advanced imaging and digital technologies.\nHe wrote and translated 14 book chapters\, and edited one text book related to full arch implant rehabilitation. He published 158 scientific articles in high impact global journals including clinical and translational research about advanced imaging\, periodontal and implant surgeries\, periodontal and peri-implant diseases. He received ten awards and honors at national and international levels due to his clinical\, educational and academic services. He also completed a sleep medicine fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in the surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea. DESCRIPTION:Join the North Side Branch on January 12\, 2027 for the lecture “How do we Set the Stage for Peri-Implant Health? Prevention and Management of Peri-implant Diseases” presented by Christine Gadia DDS MS. \nCourse Description: Dental implants have become a standard of care option to restore and reconstruct missing and ailing dentition. As more dental implants are being placed\, an increase in managing their long term complications have been noted. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the prevention and management of Peri-implant Diseases. The course will cover the key factors that influence Peri-implant Diseases\, Diagnosis\, Classification and evidence based approaches on non-surgical and surgical interventions. Attendees will learn protocols that are preventative and therapeutic strategies that can be used in their clinical practice. \nSpeaker Bio: Christine Gadia\, DDS\, MS\, is a Periodontist in the Chicagoland area. She is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Gadia graduated Cum Laude from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. She completed her general dentistry training at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 2002 and went on to receive her Master of Oral Sciences degree with an emphasis in dental biomaterials. Dr. Gadia continued her training by completing a Periodontics and Dental Implant Surgery residency program at UCLA in 2005. Dr. Gadia has served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago\, in the Department of Periodontics. \nDr. Gadia is the founder of two Periodontal and Dental Implant practices in Chicago\, IL\, Millennium Periodontics and Millennium Periodontics of Wicker Park\, where she practices full time. Dr. Gadia also continues to be involved in dental education. She has been involved in Spear Education as a study club leader for the past 10 years and is also an ITI Study Club Director and an opinion leader for an implant company. She has given lectures and presentations focused on soft tissue regeneration\, biologics\, and dental implants. Dr. Gadia is a member of the American Board of Periodontology\, American Academy of Periodontology\, Academy of Osseointegration and the ITI. \nLearning Objectives:\n1.
