Permanent link  Xylitol: The Sugar Substitute Thats Good for Teeth

02/27/2010

Mary Hayes, DDS, explains the benefits and uses of xylitol, a natural sweetner that is said to break down oral bacteria and prevent cavities. Xylitol is present in a number of products on the Midwinter Meeting exhibit floor, including Dr. John's Candies and WOW Powder Oral Rinse (watch as Ashley Bond explains how WOW works).

The benefits may extend beyond the user. Researchers in Finland found that habitual xylitol consumption of mothers was associated with a statistically significant reduction in the probability of mother-child transmission of Mutans Streptococci. This reduction was found in the children's MS counts at the age of 2, 3 and 6 years.

An extensive list of products that use xylitol can be found at Dentist.net, along with additional information.
