Permanent link  New Dentist Reception brings together young professionals

02/23/2013

Nearly 200 new dentists gathered at the close of business Friday for laughter, conversation and cocktails – all in celebration of the 148th Midwinter Meeting. The New Dentist Reception allowed old friends to reconnect, and new friendships to take root.
“We’re growing the new dentists’ network,” said Jill McMahon, a Southern Illinois University grad who has been in practice for five years. “There’s a lot of people here that I don’t recognize. It will be a good night to meet new people.”
Kajal Patel, a 2012 graduate from New York, attended for the same reason. “It seemed like a great networking event, a way to meet people who are in the same place in their lives that I am.”
The New Dentist Reception had long been a Midwinter Meeting staple, until the host restaurant shut down in 2007. The Chicago Dental Society Membership Committee brought it out of hiatus and relocated it to the McCormick Place campus in time for the 2013 Midwinter Meeting. Aspen Dental; Central Data Storage; Netsertive, Inc.; and Southpoint Insurance Agency sponsored the event.
Dr. Patel especially appreciated the opportunity to network in person, and in friendly environment.
“There are lots of opportunities online, but it’s nice to do something more personal and actually interact live.”
Texas dentists Chung-Lei Kao and Molie Xu were eager to meet up with their classmates from Case Western Reserve University. Ms. Kao posted on her Facebook page that she purchased tickets when she registered for the Midwinter Meeting, and many of her classmates responded that they would meet her there.
“This is great place for a group to get together to meet and catch up,” she said.
Connie Hunt, of Indianapolis, and Danielle Smart, of Maryland, did just that at the New Dentist Reception. They got to be friends while during their residencies at Nashville’s Meharry Medical College.
“We’ve been at the conference all day. Why not stay and be social and have a few appetizers?” Dr. Hunt said.

Permanent link  Midwinter Keeps You In The Know

02/22/2013

Early this afternoon, the blogging team ran into Dr. Robert Haraden, a dentist, Midwinter Meeting fanatic and vendor. Dr. Haraden encourages his entire staff to attend CDS’ Midwinter Meeting. This year, ten of his fourteen employees are attending classes, visiting exhibitors and taking part in networking events. Haraden says they can always count on learning new things at the Midwinter Meeting. Attending helps them stay up-to-date on the latest products and technologies.

“I tell my staff that they need to be approachable and knowledgeable, and that’s what you get here (Midwinter)," said Haraden. "That’s what makes you more valuable.”

Every Monday following Midwinter, Haraden and his staff meet to talk about their key learnings and brainstorm ways to apply their new knowledge.

Stop by booth #945 to meet the doctor and his team!

Permanent link  Single Visits to the Dentist Becoming the Norm

02/21/2013

Dental technology is keeping up with the busy lives of dentists and their patients. Gone are the days of multiple office visits to have a single crown fashioned and fitted. Today, with new CAD/CAM cameras, Sirona is helping single visits become the new norm.

We got the full rundown from Michael Den Braber at Patterson Dental (booth #1016) about the new Sirona CEREC Omnicam, which was released in August. Its slim rounded tube allows for easy rotation of the camera in the intraoral space. It’s also designed to work in conjunction with Galileos equipment.

Watch as Michael explains how quickly the crown can be made with CEREC technology, saving both time and money for dentists and patients.

Permanent link  The modern dentist: just a tweet, like, email or text away

02/20/2013

With all the advancements in dental technology (see our recent post highlighting new products at Midwinter), we’re witnessing an evolving digital age, and that speaks to more than just what’s happening inside the dental studio. Dentists are now embracing digital means to connect with their patients outside of the office.

As part of our 2013 annual member dentist survey, we asked dentists to share their digital habits, as it relates to communicating with patients, and social media activity.

  • Dental texts: A third of the dentists surveyed said they communicate with their patients via text. 46 percent said they communicate via email.
  • Dentists go social: Over a third of the dentists surveyed said their practice is currently on Facebook, while 55 percent said they have a personal Facebook account.
  • Practicing the web: 60 percent of dentists said that their practice has a website.
  • Digital calendar: Nearly 20 percent of dentists offer patients the opportunity to schedule an appointment via their practice’s website.
  • Electronic payments: 18 percent of dentists allow patients to pay their dental bills online.

Permanent link  Elementary Students Carie Biggest Burden

02/19/2013

February marks National Children's Dental Health Month, and we pay special attention to raising awareness and educating families on the importance of children’s oral health. To learn more, we asked dentists in our annual survey to weigh in.

According to the survey, preadolescent (preschool and elementary students) are most likely to get cavities. Why does this age-group struggle when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle? 60 percent of dentists said it’s due to a high consumption of sugar, juice and soda.

In addition, as a recent Chicago Tribune story reported, most parents wait too long to schedule their child’s first visit to the dentist. In fact, “Illinois children had their first dental visit more than two years later than dentists recommended in 2012,” according to the story.

Unfortunately, these unhealthy habits don’t appear to be going away. Over a third of our dentists said they have seen an increase in cavities among child patients. To help break this cycle, click here for healthy tips from a past member dentist survey:

Visit the CDS Foundation’s Healthy Kids Brush Up! page to learn how you can help educate students.

Permanent link  From fangs to bling, dentists reveal oddest patient requests

02/15/2013

As part of our 2012 annual member dentist survey, we asked which cosmetic procedure is most requested by patients. To little surprise, whitening ranks number one according to more than 75 percent of the 220 dentists surveyed.

When asked what the strangest cosmetic procedure a patient has requested, the results were a little more interesting.

Here are the top five strangest requests:

5.  Dental bling: Over half of the dentists surveyed said they’ve received requests for dental “bling,” including gold/silver crowns, diamonds, rubies and/or jewels.

4.  Pull them all: One dentist was asked for a full extraction and dentures in order to avoid brushing and flossing.

3.  Dental ink: Three percent of dentists have received requests for tattoos on the inner lip or an individual tooth.

2.  Tongue makeover: Two dentists received patient requests to have their tongues reshaped.

1.  Vampire-like chops: Four percent of dentists have received requests for vampire-like fangs.

Permanent link  IL Gov. proclaims February is Gum Disease Awareness Month

02/12/2013

It’s official: Governor Pat Quinn has signed a proclamation to recognize this month — February 2013 — as Gum Disease Awareness Month in Illinois.

Gum disease is one of the most common diseases in the United States – more prevalent than cancer, heart disease and arthritis. The consequences can be serious, but the condition can be treated in every patient. Treatment options range from regular check-ups to conventional gum surgery or laser surgery.

Mounting university research links gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, pre-term and still births and certain cancers. Over 85 percent of Americans adults have some degree of gum disease, but fewer than half are diagnosed. Often symptoms of gum disease are ignored until the disease is in advanced stages, when tooth loss is common.

Illinois has adopted Gum Disease Awareness Month in order to educate residents about widespread health threat of gum disease and the importance of prevention and treatment. With a key message of encouragement to take an active role in preventing gum disease, recognizing risk factors, getting diagnosed and seeking treatment, the initiative is lead by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, a non-profit educational and research center dedicated to providing evidence-based clinical training in laser dentistry therapies.

To learn more visit www.fightgumdisease.com or join the movement at www.facebook.com/fightgumdisease and www.twitter.com/fightgumdisease.

Permanent link  Dental records are needed to identify a fire victim

02/06/2013

At the request of the Wisconsin Dental Association, the Chicago Dental Society is asking local dentists to help identify a body. The victim is believed to be a past resident of Lincoln Park.

Following is a note we received from the Wisconsin Dental Association this morning:

This morning I was contacted by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Department.  Det. Patti Crump is looking for dental records to be used to confirm the identification of a burned body that was found outside of a burnt down house.  They believe the body to be that of Maureen A. Martin, Date of Birth 8-31-46.  Ms. Martin was originally from Lincoln Park.

If Ms. Martin was a patient of yours at any time and you have dental records that could be used to assist in positive identification, please contact Det. Crum at 920.294.4000.

Thanks for your help.

Permanent link  Explore the Midwinter Meeting App today

02/01/2013

Nearly 700 Midwinter Meeting attendees have already downloaded our 2013 Midwinter Meeting App. It’s free, and currently available for all smartphones and tablets.

If you’ve already downloaded it (and deleted the old App, with its gray icon), we hope you’ll spend some time this weekend playing around with its features. We know at least one attendee already has.

CDS staff received this question from an attendee this week:

I've had the app for a while.  It seems to do nothing for me....When selecting "your courses" nothing but the calendar appears.  Shouldn't my registered courses appear?

If you’re finding the same thing, don’t despair. The courses you have tickets for will not automatically appear in your App because the Midwinter Meeting mobile App isn’t linked to our registration system. Attendees must search in the App for the courses they plan to attend (search by day, topic or speaker) and tap on the flag to the right of the course title. A red flag will make the course appear in your calendar in the App.

Do this now (say, between commercials during Sunday’s football game) to save time and frustration during the Midwinter Meeting. Upon arriving, you’ll be able to tap “Your Favorites” and “Your Course Schedule” to quickly find the times and locations of your chosen destinations.

See you at McCormick Place West!
