We've all heard folks complain "that was as much fun as a root canal" to describe painful or unpleasant experiences. The Chicago Dental Society polled more than 350 members to get their ideas on experiences that really are less fun than a root canal.
One of the most common responses was "needing a root canal and not getting one." As many dentists pointed out, the terrible pain of a diseased tooth far outweighs the mild annoyance of getting a root canal.
The Society's dentists came up with hundreds of other things worse that a root canal. Here are the top ten:
10) "A long car ride with in-laws"
9) "Getting a Brazilian bikini wax"
8) "A birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese"
7) "Listening to my teenagers' music"
6) "Being bitten by a patient"
5) "Asking a girl out for a first date"
4) "Watching the Cubs"
3) "Watching political ads"
2) "Giving birth - at least a root canal doesn't go home with you, need diaper changes, cry, then learn to talk!"
What do dentists think is really worse than a root canal?
1) Hearing someone say ‘that was about as much fun as a root canal'"
The survey was conducted for the Chicago Dental Society's 142nd annual Midwinter Meeting, which will bring more than 32,000 dental professionals to Chicago this February. The Midwinter Meeting is a forum for dentists to learn about new products, technologies, and methods.
