Tooth whitening is the number one most requested cosmetic dental procedure today; in fact, Americans spent $1.4 billion last year on over-the-counter whitening products alone.
With the rising popularity of drugstore products, the Chicago Dental Society polled its members to find out whether patients are overusing tooth whiteners. Forty percent of the 350 dentists surveyed said they were concerned about patients' too white smiles.
While tooth whitening is generally safe, abuse or misuse of whitening products can cause problems like gum irritation and leave you with an unnatural-looking smile. Patients should talk with their dentist before trying any product.
