Dentistry without Drilling Becoming a Major Trend with New Cavity Treatments
Patient Comfort Focus of Futuristic Dental Office on Display
CHICAGO—More than 30,000 dentists and dental professionals will get a first peek at the latest innovations in dentistry, from the futuristic “Tomorrow's Dental Office—Today” to new high-tech ways of diagnosing and treating cavities, at the Chicago Dental Society's 140th Midwinter Meeting. Held February 24 through 27 at McCormick Place, the Midwinter Meeting attracts dental professionals and more than 600 exhibitors from around the world.
The meeting is one of the largest exhibits of dental products in North America and one of Chicago's top 20 conventions. Last year's conference generated more than $44.7 million for the local economy, according to the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau.
New products and technologies from companies in 46 countries include:
“As visitors to the Midwinter Meeting will see, a major trend in dentistry right now is the early diagnosis and treatment of cavities,” CDS President Dr. Ronald Testa, a pediatric dentist, says. “We can now detect cavities in their earliest stages by using cultures and fluorescent light. Dentists also have more options at their disposal, like smart materials that rebuild damaged teeth, mouth rinses that kill cavity-causing bacteria and devices that use water and air—instead of a drill—to remove decay.”
The Chicago Dental Society also conducted its second annual member poll to learn more about their opinions on topics ranging from the top 10 foods that cause cavities to who has the most beautiful smile in Chicago. From the nearly 200 members who answered, the society learned:
Visitors to the Midwinter Meeting will not only have the first peek at an array of dental products but also the opportunity to attend more than 100 courses. Popular presentations at the meeting include lectures on women's health issues and infection control. Dr. William Dorfman from the hit show Extreme Makeover will also be in attendance to speak to dentists about some of the latest trends in cosmetic dentistry.
Established in 1864, the Chicago Dental Society counts more than 8,000 dentists as members, making it the largest local affiliate of the American Dental Association. The society advocates for improving oral health care in this country and represents the interests of its members and the public they serve.
A tradition of working for the dental profession. The Chicago Dental Society was organized in 1864 and incorporated in 1878. The objective of the Chicago Dental Society is to encourage the improvement of the health of the public, to promote the art and science of dentistry and to represent the intrest of the members of the profession and the public that it serves.
