Drs. Thomason and Sitbon were among 75 international attendees who visited the International Lounge in the Exhibit Hall. More than 45 members of the Chicago Dental Society responded to an email and volunteered to help out our international attendees. They made available their skills translating in 20 languages; Hebrew, Russian, Hindi, Korean and Greek were among the languages represented.

“We recognize that there is an international presence at this meeting, and we’re trying to do more to be welcoming to these attendees,” said Andrew Browar, chair of CDS’ Ad Hoc Global Marketing Committee. “We are so grateful for the great response we had from our members.”

Can you believe that Chicago hosted more than 1.1 million overseas visitors in 2010? The Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture reported that they were but a fraction of the 39 million people who came to Chicago for business or pleasure that year, for a total economic impact of $11 billion to our fine city.

If you’re crossing a border for the Midwinter Meeting next month, we’ve got numerous services in place to make your trip as easy as possible. (We can’t help what happens at baggage claim, sorry.)

Think of us while you’re planning your trip. We’re happy to supply you with a Letter of Invitation or other document for your visa application. Check out our website and click on the link to the left to start the process.

Also on our website you’ll find a list of 16 hotels where we’ve reserved rooms for Midwinter Meeting attendees at preferred rates. Tell the booking agent that you’re with us when you reserve your room.

Once you arrive in Chicago, consider a shuttle bus from either of the nearest airports — O’Hare and Midway — to your hotel. Make a reservation in advance with Go Airport Express

We’ve also arranged shuttle bus service between McCormick Place West and 15 of those hotels (one hotel is on the McCormick Place campus, and only a short walk from courses and the Exhibit Hall). If you’re commuting from one of Chicago’s fine suburbs or traveling by Amtrak from slightly farther, look for free shuttle service to McCormick Place West from Ogilvie and Union stations at the beginning and end of each meeting day. Enjoy the ride!

Does it surprise you to hear that Illinois is the seventh most popular state for overseas visitors, and Chicago is the 10th most popular American city?  In 2010, Chicago hosted 1.134 million international visitors; The economic impact of tourism in Cook County (Chicago’s home) alone tops $17 billion, according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Tourism.

The Chicago Dental Society is proud to welcome many of these international visitors annually at the Midwinter Meeting, especially those who come to share their products in the Exhibit Hall. More than 70 international companies have reserved exhibit space for the 2012 Midwinter Meeting.

We hope you’ll join us in welcoming them to The City of Big Shoulders.

“International companies put an extraordinary amount of work into their plans for traveling across boarders and exhibiting in our country,” said Lisa Girardi, director of Exhibit Services. “But we are so glad that they do, because they bring to the Exhibit Hall new markets.

“The Midwinter Meeting is without borders; our meeting attracts attendees from all over the world, and our exhibition, with the help of our international exhibiting partners, helps to firmly establish the Midwinter Meeting as the International Dental Meeting in the USA.”
