Permanent link  Midwinter Meeting 2015: Spotlight on The 360 Experience

02/11/2015

The Midwinter Meeting scientific program has long boasted of courses for the whole dental team. But this year's 360 Experience takes it to a new level.

Offered by a team of four speakers — two dentists, a management consultant and a hygienist — the 360 Experience brings your office team together to learn about topics that relate to each person's role in your practice. These include embracing new materials, communication skills, hot topics in restorative dentistry, new technology to enhance the patient experience, and interactive learning.

Ted Borris, director of scientific programs at the Chicago Dental Society, explained that all participants will start the day-long session together, split into units by profession (dentist, hygienist, dental assistant and office manager) for break out sessions with the speakers, and then reunite at the end of the day for a summation.

“This program is about getting everyone on the dental team talking from the same page, since it is the whole team that creates the patient experience,” he said. “You might think you are working together when you start the day, but the speakers will help you see how far apart you are, check in with attendees throughout the day to monitor your progress, and then help the team plan its next steps for when everyone returns to the office.”

The coordinated curriculum was added to the 2015 Midwinter Meeting in response to requests and recommendations from past meeting attendees, CDS President Susan Becker Doroshow said.

“Our meeting has always had courses that all team members could attend together, but that were still primarily targeted to assistants, or business staff, or hygienists,” she said. “One thing that Program Chair David Lewis, General Chair Mark Humenik, and I heard over and over when we asked attendees for feedback about the Midwinter Meeting was that they wished there was something that everyone in the office could experience together.

“We were thrilled to have DENTSPLY’s corporate support for a program that is exactly that: an educational experience tailored to each dental team member, with plenty of opportunities throughout the day to share what they’ve learned. I’m confident that teams who take advantage of this program and its unique educational format will return to their offices with a new enthusiasm for caring for their patients.”

The day-long 360 Experience will be offered Friday, Feb. 27, beginning at 8:15 a.m.  Register for the 360 Experience, C239, with your other Midwinter Meeting courses and special event tickets.

More than 1,500 professionals registered for the Chicago Dental Society’s 3rd Virtual Reality Meeting (VRM) Wednesday, Sept. 25. CDS President David Fulton Jr., who has wholeheartedly supported the VRM since its inception, said the number of registered participants is invigorating.

“It shows that there is significant interest in the technology, whether our participants attend the event live or return at a later date to view the lectures on demand,” Dr. Fulton said.“I've always been the guy who wants to have as many tools in my house as possible. You never know what you might need or when you might need it, but if you're prepared with all the latest and greatest tools, you're guaranteed to be able to get the job done. And I am so proud that CDS has been able to include Virtual Reality Meetings in its tool belt.

“I believe that each year we are challenged by other dental societies to back up our claim that we are the leaders in scientific dental meetings. To mirror that claim, we most certainly need to have the VRM in our tool belt.”

Feedback from other attendees was similarly positive. Some of the comments shared in the Virtual Lounge and the CDS booth in the Exhibit Hall during the live event included:

  • Who doesn't want one of these lasers in our practice? So cool!
  • thank you for a great presentation. I wished it was longer so the clinical cases could be expanded and more of the technique shown.
  • Thank you for this very convenient and comfortable style of getting quality CE. You guys are the best!
  • Great time I really enjoyed all the information that was shared today. #knowledgeispower
  • Great event...so full of great presentations. I'll follow you even next year!
  • It is a great webinar, and am enjoying it tremendously. Thanks again!
  • This is my first virtual meeting with CDS! I'm so excited! This is awesome!!! Thank you :)

Participants who watched the live courses Sept. 25 received their CE certificates via email the following day. However, recorded courses will be available for self-study credits on demand through Dec. 25; CE certificates for on-demand users will be emailed weekly.

Live event participants also collected badges and earned points for doing things like visiting the Exhibit Hall and playing our custom trivia game. Prize winners were:

  • Dr. John Jimenez: Apple iPad
  • Dr. Robert Bara: Kindle Fire
  • Dr. Lisa Salisbury: Apple iPod
  • Dr. Andrea Ruby: $75 Amazon gift card
  • Dr. William Madison: $50 Amazon gift card

Congratulations to all, and watch for news about our next CE opportunity at www.cds.org.

What’s that old adage about talking the talk and walking the walk? At the Midwinter Meeting, our experts do BOTH in the Live CE theater.

Located in the southeast corner of the Exhibit Hall, Midwinter Meeting attendees will have a bird’s eye view when three leading clinicians perform the techniques they’re teaching – as they’re teaching them. The Live CE theater uses cameras and plasma screens to broadcast the instructor’s technique to the audience as it is being practiced on site, in real time.

“There’s always a benefit to seeing how it’s done by an expert,” said Al Kleszynski, CDS’s Director of Scientific Programs. The use of current technology for this live-patient demonstration means that every seat in the house is a good one.

With Frank Milnar discussing restoratives, Ahmad Eslami and James Stein on implants, and Chicago’s own Fred Margolis on lasers, there is something for everyone in the Live TV Theater. Swing by on your way through the Exhibit Hall at the Midwinter Meeting, and see what strikes you.

Tickets are not required for admission, but attendees will have their badges scanned upon arrival and exit so that their presence is recorded and partial or full CE credit can be awarded.

And while you’re in the Exhibit Hall, spend some time browsing the booths. CDS is proud to offer 1 CE credit hour per day when you visit the Exhibit Hall. Look for signs with CE Codes near the Overlook Café no less than three hours after the Exhibit Hall opens.
