Permanent link  Scope out new exhibitors at the Midwinter Meeting

One of the wonderful things about the Midwinter Meeting is the number of relationships that get rekindled on site. We’ve used this space before to promote all the places at McCormick Place West where old friends can reconnect.

But we’re equally excited to meet new friends at the 148th Midwinter Meeting. The Chicago Dental Society will welcome 103 new exhibiting companies to the Exhibit Hall next month.

It’s exciting for a few reasons. It means our attendees will have access to more products and services this year to benefit their practice of dentistry. It also means that more companies are making the Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting part of their business plans. We’re proud to be their partner and we wish them every success.

Among the new exhibitors in 2013 will be California-based Your HealthCredit in Booth 3847.

“Your HealthCredit is thrilled to be a part of the Midwinter Meeting because our patient financing solution will be a real game changer for a lot of dental practices. By offering multiple financing solutions under one application, treating more patients optimally just got a whole lot easier,” said Barbara Barry, SVP Marketing.

Across the Exhibit Hall in Booth 1047 will be Ghost Mfg., from St. Joseph, MI.

“We feel blessed and are very excited to be an exhibitor at the Midwinter Meeting in 2013.  This meeting will give our small business the chance to share our revolutionary new Multi-Axis Spiral Suction high-volume evacuator dental suction tip with a large number of professionals in the dental community,” said CEO and inventor David Ronto. “We feel our device will simplify the lives of dentists, assistants, and hygienists alike and welcome this opportunity.”

Find a complete list of new exhibitors on the Midwinter Meeting Mobile App (it’s new for 2013) and then plan your visit to the Exhibit Hall using our Virtual Exhibit Hall.

Permanent link  Expand your network at the New Dentists Reception

With 32,000 dental professionals expected to convene at McCormick Place next month, running into an old classmate is an unexpected surprise.

Unless, of course, you know where to look. Just ask Chicago dentist Lynse Briney.

She’s one of many who will be attending the New Dentist Reception at the Midwinter Meeting. The Happy Hour event brings together dentists who have been in practice for no more than 10 years for cocktails, conversation and camaraderie among contemporaries.

“We all seem to be so busy these days and since you’re already at the Midwinter Meeting it's an easy way to meet up,” Dr. Briney explained. “It gives new dentists the chance to network with other dentists that are in the same shoes!  We can catch up on the best practices that work in our offices, discuss how to juggle work-life balance, vent about the practice options before us and much, much more.  Best of all it gives us the opportunity to catch up with classmates we may have not seen in a while.

“And it gives us the chance to meet new dentists and expand our networks of friends and colleagues.”

Keyur Shah consistently made time for these kinds of networking events as he began his career, and said it paid off.

“We’re all like-minded and have similar goals, so it’s nice to interact,” live and in person, he said. “I always get tidbits of good information from these events – you can ask anyone about anything and the conversations are relevant and current.” His mentors encouraged him to start attending these events while he was still in dental school, and he’s so thankful that they did.

“It’s very valuable to interact with your colleagues and promote organized dentistry.”

Dr. Briney added that they’re just plain fun.

“I love catching up with people, seeing new friends and old.  It helps keep me in touch with reality and not get bogged down in the daily grind!”

To join Drs. Briney and Shah and others at the New Dentist Reception at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in 260 Restaurant at McCormick Place West, register for SE5 when you register for your Midwinter Meeting courses.

And if you’ve already registered, you can add the reception to your existing registration.

Permanent link  Dental student's posters helps patients understand dental X-rays

Connecticut dental student Jevin Carruth knows that an increasing number of patients are questioning the safety of dental x-rays. His challenge, however, was to find a simple answer that would put patients at ease.

He sought information from sources like the American Nuclear Society to show the amount of radiation given off by dental X-rays compared to other common sources of radiation, such as a cross-country flight. He added visual elements to illustrate complicated scientific principles for common use, and he laminated it for repeated reference in the dental office. His poster, "Radiation Facts" compares dental X-rays to sunlight, breathing, and a full-body CT scan.

Today, Mr. Carruth is selling this illustration to clinicians the country. Posters and handouts are available in three colors for purchase in packages ranging from $15-$100, with 10 percent of sales to CDS members benefitting the Illinois Mission of Mercy.

For more information contact Mr. Carruth, UCONN School of Dental Medicine Class of 2015, at

Remind him that you learned about it from CDS, so that the Illinois Mission of Mercy benefits from your purchase.

Permanent link  Support Healthy Kids with $15 today

If you’re thinking about National Children’s Dental Health Month, you’re not alone. The Chicago Dental Society Foundation has plans, too, for the Healthy Kids Brush Up! program – and they need your help.

This campaign puts toothbrushes, toothpaste and volunteer dentists in local classrooms to encourage better oral hygiene habits among students. Nearly 200 schools will receive more than 56,000 toothbrushes next month — paid for in part by donations from our CDS members and other friends of the CDS Foundation.

Help us extend the program through your donation today. Your $15 gift will provide a whole classroom with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and educational materials to make them meaningful.

Please donate now. And share the link on your Facebook Page and Twitter feed to further our fundraising efforts.

(The fundraising page also has buttons in the upper right hand corner to help you share the page via email to your friends and associates or on your Pinterest page, but we don't want to be greedy...)

Permanent link  Word of Mouth Marketing: Going from the Streets to the Web

In the world of dentistry, paid advertising is no match to the power and influence of word-of-mouth referrals. In fact, after surveying more than 200 of the Chicago Dental Society’s members, we found that nearly 50 percent of dentists don’t spend a penny on advertising.

That said, there’s still an opportunity to upgrade the chatter about your practice. With more and more consumers increasingly turning to the internet to find a dentist, entering the digital landscape is a must for the modern dentist.

Many practices have taken advantage of the free and cost-effective methods to getting the word out via the web. Over a third of the dentists surveyed said that their practice has a Facebook account, and nearly 60 percent said their practice has a website.

Practices not yet in the digital space will find that they already have an online reputation—due mainly in part to consumer review websites. While these online channels may be impossible to control, there’s still the opportunity to influence the conversation. Connecting and engaging with patients via social media is not only free, it’s a tool that allows you to interact with current and potential patients, build relationships and be recognized as a reliable source of information.

If your practice wants to learn more on how to start engaging on social media, visit CDS’ Stephanie Sisk’s Front Desk column or look for digital-minded courses when registering for the 2013 Midwinter Meeting

Permanent link  New Year, new features at the Midwinter Meeting

Happy New Year from the Chicago Dental Society! If your office is anything like ours, your days are filled with new things, like the crack of the 2013 calendars that we’ve just now unwrapped, and efforts toward personal changes we hope to make permanent. We wish you the best of luck and success with the challenges you take on this year.

But there are also new things to look forward to, especially at the Midwinter Meeting. We hope you’ve registered and secured your place at the 148th Midwinter Meeting, Feb. 21-23, at McCormick Place West.

We’re excited about these new additions, coming in February:

The New Dentist Reception finds a new home at the Midwinter Meeting, enabling those dentists who have been in practice for no more than 10 years to gather for cocktails, conversations and camaraderie among contemporaries on site. The reception is Friday, Feb. 22, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Level 2, 260 Restaurant. Tickets are $10, and required for admission. Add SE5 to your Midwinter Meeting registration now.

Also available on site is a new Rebate Redemption Center. CDS members who’ve registered for the Midwinter Meeting (or who do so before Feb. 1) receive with their materials a rebate coupon for goods purchased from a Midwinter Meeting Exhibitor in the Exhibit Hall. Whereas those rebates have previously been redeemed in droves via the good ‘ole USPS, this year CDS will accept your coupons and proof of purchase on the exhibit floor, near the Live TV Theater. Rebates will be processed after the meeting and sent to your home.
